Mixing flannel-and-jeans guitars with damn-the-man surliness, this Ohio college rock quartet evokes the affable slackerdom of the Soul Asylum-era Minneapolis scene. Here's hoping they skip out on that corporate world they deplore and keep on laying down rootsy scruff ditties.

CGS is a trio of artists/musicians hailing from Ohio. We started CGS in 1998, experimenting with a sound that would expand and evolve over time. In the beginning, we were interested in the traditional and alt-country movements. The first phase of our material was formed by early legends like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams Sr., and by later masters like R.E.M. and Wilco. We responded to their heart-on-your-sleeve vulnerability and troubadour stylings. However, we have also moved on to explore other territories: straight Rock & Roll, Alternative, Singer/Songwriter and Jazz-Pop, to name a few. Our music is fed by influences - from Nick Cave to the Kinks, from U2 to Steeley Dan, and more. By name-checking these artists, we don't mean to indicate that CGS has a direct correlation to their sounds. They are simply influences, sometimes ideological, sometimes lyrical, sometimes conceptual.
What separates us from the rest of the hundreds upon hundreds of bands out there?? Perhaps the simplest difference between us and other bands is that our band's music is not the music of other bands. (Obvious, huh?) Sure, we play guitars, we sing, we have keyboards, and a beat. But, in the end, it's the myriad of ideas we bring to the table that makes us stand apart. We don't claim to have some otherworldly technique that is going to change the face of modern music or popular culture. Our identity derives from the diversity of material and the amalgam of influences that form it. We exist as a band to create new music - pure and simple.
We hope you like what you hear.
