Clinker is the work of audio/visual designer Gary James Joynes, who develops and builds large-scale ambient experiments and environments. Joynes is worthy of the festivals and gatherings he plays all over the world--including the prestigious MUTEK electronic music festival in Montreal.
GARY JAMES JOYNES is a dedicated musician, sound designer, and visual artist. He has brought his experience as an audio engineer and his talent as a bassist/vocalist to many progressive rock projects during the 80's and 90's, for whom he composed and designed sound for.
Approximately five years ago he became interested in electronic music and immediately started developing his own ambient experiments. Soon he assembled audio and visual happenings with local artists, building on innovative and stimulating environments.
He has been regularly participating in significant events over the last three years. October 2003 marked CLINKER's first appearance in Europe with the inclusion of his piece ice man (is it just me, or are winters getting longer) in the audiovisual program at STANDART 2003 in Madrid, Spain. In July 2003 "ice man" was also presented as part of the Experimental Video Screening Room at the NEW FORMS FESTIVAL 2003 in Vancouver. In May 2003 CLINKER made his premiere outside his native Alberta at the prestigious MUTEK FESTIVAL in Montreal performing in the same program as THOMAS KONER, ASMUS TIETCHENS (KONTAKT DER JUNGLINGE), and CHRISTOF MIGONE. Other recent appearances include: curating and performing at Edmonton's PERIPHERY and MUSIQUE CONDUIT festivals, opening for DO MAKE SAY THINK as the ELIZABETH SETTLEMENT, collaborative works with SNEAK-THIEF, and two performances at Edmonton's EXE festival, one as OPASCOPE and a solo performance as MORPHOPHONE, plus various CD releases under the names THE MACHINE ISLE, and OPASCOPE.
As an artist he's fascinated by the sources of electronic composition. He obsessively researches and collects material and equipment to enrich his practice. He also draws from everyday soundscapes: objects and mechanisms stimulate his process and of course his son Ayden is a major inspiration keeping him amazed and creative.
Gary subsidizes his music and artistic career working as an art director, graphic and web designer.
