Like its name, Vancouver group Coal burns with a slow heat and soft glow, creating self-described "torch noir." The indie-pop vets have been luminaries of the Canadian scene for years, drawing fans of the Cowboy Junkies and Mazzy Star with husky vocals and gleaming, incandescent guitars.

Formed in 1990 from the depths of the Vancouver post-punk scene,Coal made their live debut at the famed Commodore Ballroom. Zulu Records released the self titled Cd and cassette,with a video of the track "No Angel" airing on CMT,Muchmusic and Bravo.Song was also included on the soundtrack to the MGM/Green Tea film "Headless Body in Topless Bar".The bands sophomore CD "One Track Mind" has been reviewed as.."one of the best Canadian releases of 98" and includes a video of the track "Invisible Man".Coal has performed at music festivals across North America..NewMusicWest,NXNE,Northwest Music Conference,SXSW and the CMJ Music Marathon in New York.In October of 2000 the band released a video compilation "Coalescent:Six Videos by Coal" and celebrated their 10th anniversary.At the end of 2001, Coal released their 3rd independent CD" Beautiful Afterburn" to local,national and international acclaim.
Coal's songs have been included in the television show "Higher Ground", as well as indie feature films "The Widower" ,"Chinese Checkers" and the film"Deluxe Combo Platter."
