Scion Audio Visual's damn-good idea--having tight young bands cover famous MC tracks, joined by the MC--gets an outstanding outlet with the Keystones and Kane on "Give a Demonstration." The crew build a retro-funk romp, with acid jazz on the left and old-school flows on the right.
Scion consistently champions independent thought and progressive urban culture through its music initiatives. Scion Audio Visual, the company's in-house record label provides a platform for passionate musicians to focus on developing their art and exploring endless creative possibilities.
SAV's first releases have been a series of 12"s promoting MCs and band pairings through promotionally distributed vinyl/cd/digital releases. Each single has featured a world class MC or singer with an up-and-coming live band, the band supporting the vocalist through doing a live "cover" of that vocalist's song. Past collaborations have included El Michels Affair with Raekwon, the daKAH Hip Hop Orchestra featuring Guru of Gangstarr; The Fyre Dept. with GZA, and Rhythm Roots Allstars featuring Raheem Devaughn.
This time around, SAV comes with a dirty soul funk gem served up by Connie Price and the Keystones revisiting the classic Big Daddy Kane track "Give A Demonstration Part 2" complete with new lyrics from Big Daddy Kane himself. The indelible Percee P is featured on the B-Side "International Hustler".
Connie Price & the Keystones began as a recording project for Stones Throw's Now-Again label, involving Dan Ubick (Breakestra, Madlib's Sound Directions) and Todd M. Simon (Macy Gray, Antibalas, El Michels Affair). Combining elements of soul, afro beat, dub reggae, late '60's/early '70's film scores, and psychedelic rock & jazz into a soundtrack album for the best film you've never seen. Dan and Todd have worked with everyone from Quantic Soul Orchestra, Madlib, and DJ Greyboy, to Aloe Blacc and Thievery Corporation. Connie Price & The Keystones are currently in the studio recording brand new material for a fall 2007 release on Ubiquity Records featuring a slew of talented MC's and instrumentalists.
