Kanye, won’t you please haul your gear down to Barbados? Caribbean native Damian MarVay coaxes West Indian soca rhythms out of traditional hip-hop beats with miraculous results. MarVay is a rum cocktail in a world of lukewarm hip-hop 40s.
What happens to a dream deferred?
Langston Hughes, Dreams Different! This seems to be the common sentiment expressed by listeners when they catch an earful of the infectious sounds of aspiring singer/songwriter/poet Damian. They feel enraptured by his freshly unique new sound and invited to soak in even more of the thought provoking and mature vibes that seethe from every lyric and every note that escapes his mind and his lips. It may all seem unexpected for a young guy of such a relatively babyish age of 23, but just experience his talent for one second or one note and it will all become clear
Born Damian Lythcott on the small but gorgeously majestic island of Barbados in the Eastern Caribbean, this young talent is ready to take the world by storm by blending R&B, Soul, Jazz, and Hip-Hop with the all-too-contagious rhythms of West Indian Soca and Reggae. This unique sound offers an infinitely cultural mix that conventional R&B sometimes misses.
Try all you might, his originality is impossible to resist and soon you either find yourself bobbing and swaying your head to a catchy beat and melody or leaning in to focus on the Real-life inspired lyrics that Damian pens himself.
With topics ranging from Love and the usual relationship winces and wonders to Self-actualization and even social commentary on society s self-made cycles and obstacles, Damian explores areas of his creativity that most singer-songwriters might not experience throughout 10 years or 5 albums! His maturity and vision is not only evident in the subjects he uses in his writing but definitely in the style of the writing itself.
Even if conveying a message that has been made clich by countless songs, movies, television shows, and books over time, Damian always tries to say it differently! He challenges himself, lyric by lyric, to make poetry out of mere words.
Actually it is a love for poetry that fuels much of his wording, with some tracks even done primarily in spoken word. A prolific writer outside of music as well, Damian almost constantly increases his present repertoire of over 190 poems, with an anthology of his works already being published right at this moment!
Possessing a genuine interest in the arts, he appreciates true artistic expression...in all forms! Leaving no stone unturned, Damian has taken his artistry to a new level since attending University in Florida (FloridaTech). Having joined the acting troupe and choreographing and dancing for two contemporary dance troupes at the school, he has developed new sides of his personality, increased his confidence and taken his stage performance to a hugely professional level since his former days at Harrison College (a Barbadian High School).
He has also taken his progression as an artist into his own hands by self-producing his original songs on his trusty computer and performing at every pageant, show or party that occurs at the school.
Feeling plays a great role in any of Damian s performances because he wants everything to be just right for the audience. He believes that delivery, whether visually or aurally, is the first priority. He believes if he doesn t mean what he says and have a real love for entertaining his listeners, then they won t have real love for him.
This type of sincere attitude and calculated quest to standout among many other youngsters doing the same thing caught the interest of one of Barbados premiere Producers, Chris Allman (Producer for Caribbean Superstar & International Recording Artist Rupee), in the summer of 2002, when Damian released one of his many self-produced pieces to local radio. Within 2 days, he was inducted into the HeavyWeight Entertainment group and was well on his way to realizing his wildest dreams!
To date, Damian has helped pen, produce or add vocals for a slew of Caribbean and even European Projects. Most notably that of Rupee, his musical mentor, whom he admires greatly and respects not only for his talent but for his progressive, independent attitude towards his craft.
Damian is still cranking out his own hits (three of which are in regular radio rotation in his homeland of Barbados) and is compiling them on an impressive demo album that will soon hopefully see him bearing the fruits of his artistic muse and stamping an indelible mark in Entertainment history!!
