The term "dream pop" gets bandied about too much these days, but if you sound drowsier than Mazzy Star you can credibly lay claim. Such is the blissful, narcotic feel of ex-Luna pair Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips. Their Visconti-produced latest swells on thick harmonies and lazy strings.
Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips were both former members of Luna. Started by Wareham in 1992, Luna made 7 studio albums and played their final shows in February 2005. Luna’s "Best Of" was recently released by Rhino and Beggar’s Banquet. Prior to Luna, Dean fronted Galaxie 500, whose discs are currently available on Rykodisc. Britta joined Luna in 1999. Before that, she played in several bands (Belltower, Ultrababyfat, Ben Lee), starred in the movie Satisfaction (with Julia Roberts and Justine Bateman and Liam Neeson and Steve Cropper), and was the singing voice of 80s cartoon character, JEM.
In 2003 Dean and Britta released L'Avventura, an album of covers and duets produced by Tony Visconti (Bowie, T. Rex). This was followed by an EP of remixes by Sonic Boom, entitled Sonic Souvenirs. D&B recently released the EP, Words You Used to Say, in October 2006 and their new album, Back Numbers, with Visconti, was released on Zoe/Rounder Records on February 27, 2007. Dean & Britta have also delved into the world of composing for film (in 2004 they did the score for The Squid & the Whale by Noah Baumbach).
