Editor's review

There's no energy crisis when it comes to Dirty Power. Few rock the San Francisco Bay Area harder than the tough, tight foursome comprising former members of Pansy Division and Planet Seven. Let the headbanging ensue as "Penny Eyes" and "Open Fist" trigger hazy memories of humid nights in dive bars, cheap beer on school nights, and heated dart games with bearish bikers.

Dirty Power is a hard rock band from San Francisco.

In Spring 2000 the future members of Dirty Power started getting together at a tiny rehearsal space in San Francisco. Patrock Goodwin(vocals, guitar), Jeff Potts(drums, vocals), Steve Perrone(guitar), and Nick Ulman(bass, vocals) all knew each other from playing in various bands around town. After a few informal jams two things became apparent: First was that all four had a taste for loud and heavy rock that they hadn’t been able to satisfy in their previous bands. Second was that Patrock could write songs that were the perfect for this style of music.

Drawing on the raw power of bands such as AC/DC and Motorhead, the hooks of Cheap Trick and early Def Leppard, and the low-end sludge of Black Sabbath, Dirty Power set out to create a rock monster. The focus is on real songs with traditional structure, not just a bunch of heavy riffs strung together with someone screaming over the top. The ingredients include ballsy yet melodic lead vocals, loud and crunchy guitars, sing-along choruses and tight musicianship. To this add dueling lead guitars a la Thin Lizzy and strong backing vocals and you have the blueprint for Dirty Power’s sound.

Dirty Power played its first official show May 3, 2001, to a crowd of about 30 people at the Eagle Tavern in San Francisco. One year and a dozen or so shows later, the band was signed to Dead Teenager Records. The label sent the band to record its first album with Jack Endino(Soundgarden, Nirvana, Hot Hot Heat, etc…) in Seattle. To quote Jack's Web site "Dirty Power came up and we made my favorite record of the year. Six months later and I'm still humming their songs in spite of having recorded a bunch of other records in the meantime!"

In January 2003, after winning a large cash prize in a bizarre battle-of-the-bands contest, Dirty Power bought a van and started playing up and down the West Coast. Their eponymous debut CD was released nationwide on Dead Teenager Records in early 2003 and garnered rave reviews. Armed with 11 heavy anthems, Dirty Power toured the country in the Fall of 2003. They have shared stages with the who’s who of hard and heavy music including Fu Manchu, Zeke, High On Fire, and Nebula. Their new EP, “A Small Offering” is out now on Wondertaker Records.
