There's no easy reference point for the Baltimore smith, an M.I.A. cohort whose only equatable artist--Ms. Mia herself--is defined by mixing literally everything. To put our best foot forward on the strange and addictive "Shake It to the Ground": playground music with sass and smarts no kid's got.
MAD DECENT TO RELEASE BLAQSTARR EP
SUPASTARR EP COMING MARCH 07 SHAKE IT TO THE GROUND 12” ALSO COMING LATE MARCH W/ SWITCH AND CLAUDE VON STROKE REMIXES
Something akin to the marriage of The Clipse, Radiohead, Carl Craig, and Peter Gabriel, Blaqstarr is messy but a true product of the American inner city. Like most Baltimore club music, Blaqstarr is completely for the streets. His city wide live PAs for all ages kids have inspired and invented frenetic dances all over the mid-Atlantic to his music (see: footwork, the “Spongebob”.) Earlier in 2006 Blaqstarr produced an enormous radio hit, “Jiggle It” (Young Leak, Def Jam) and has even contributed to the next Yung Joc and M.I.A. albums. Baltimore club music is a world that has no proper release at all - but all the local kids can hum the lyrics by heart. Its a strange phenomenon now in its second generation. A black innercity subculture with roots in Lil Jon, Daft Punk, 50 Cent, and Basement Jaxx creates a soundscape related to an offshoot of Motown and Acid House. Their foundations lie in hip-hop music but all beats remain at 130bpm tempo. That being said, the Supastarr EP is 100 percent Baltimore city. It's grindin’ in city streets to late nights in the basement mixing music on stock PC speakers with street sounds of sirens and baby cries off in the background. Blaqstarr is one of a few young artists redefining the music that is gaining more worldwide notoriety - It’s a dirty house scene that has been isolated in the clubs and basements in Baltimore for 15 years experiencing a new found life with a generation raised on crunk and snap music. Dj Blaqstarr makes a wall of sound, a syncopated riot, and isn’t afraid to sing his ass off; a violent, progressive soul music. This EP will be followed by a 12” of “Shake it to the Ground” with remixes by Switch and Claude Von Stroke.
