Duane Denison was the guitarist for Jesus Lizard. While other members of the group were spending their spare time finishing school and having babies, Mr. Denison spent his pursuing other musical interests. This led to the forming of the Denison/Kimball Trio, a two-piece trio featuring the percussive skills of one James Kimball. Mr. Kimball had spent the better part of the previous ten years drumming for the Laughing Hyenas and Mule. Upon relocating to Chicago from Michigan, he had spent time doing freelance recording and/or touring with Foetus, Firewater, and the Spinnanes, amongst others.

Both members, however, had prior experience with non-rock ensembles. Mr. Denison was a music major in college, and studied classical guitar with a variety of teachers- including Segovia protégé Christopher Parkening. Mr. Kimball studied jazz drums early on, playing in both his high school and college jazz ensembles.
