Buzz-worthy beats and rhymes by the Dragon Fli Empire have thankfully landed. The group's warm, jazzed-up production has turned the frozen tundra of Calgary into a heated hip-hop swamp. DJ Cosm builds a proverbial pasture of beats consisting of drum chops laced with funky guitar and Rhodes samples, while cohort Teekay blesses the mic with smooth, positive lyricism.
Introducing, the Dragon Fli Empire. Hailing from the prairie metropolis of Calgary, Alberta, the DFE is making noise. Good noise. With smooth positive lyricism, precise cuts and delicious, boom-bap production, the group has received accolades after every show they’ve rocked. Local college radio and entertainment newspapers love the vibe, finding it hard to believe the beats and rhymes they’re hearing are local. Now, the whole country is digging the sound. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has been playing the single “Mount Pleasant” and other DFE tracks coast-to-coast on radio for almost a year now. The song was number nine in CBC’s top 20 indie tracks of the year, with the only other hip hop groups on the list being established acts mcenroe and Classified. They’ve also filmed the group for a national television performance on the program “ZeD”. Thow in a CBC compilation CD feature, concert appearances and future exposure in the works… you can safely say this “dragon fli” has the nation buzzing. But… who is the Dragon Fli Empire? The emcee of the crew is Teekay, a Canadian-born son of Jamaican immigrants. He’s entertained crowds from Calgary to Spokane to San Francisco and Cuba, rocking with names like the Beatnuts, Royce da 5'9, Lyrics Born, Swollen Members, Josh Martinez, Pigeon John, Mystik Journeymen, Lightheaded and the Oddities. He’s known for his infectious positivity, turning depressed dancehalls into buzzing hotspots. The guy in the back is Cosm, a producer and DJ. He leads the group’s musical direction through programming various chops and loops from his 2000 plus vinyl collection into an ASR-10 keyboard. He’s also a college radio DJ and a promoter. Together they are the Dragon Fli Empire. But… what is a Dragon Fli Empire? Teekay sums it up like this… “We’re about to buzz by and catch some fools by surprise. Our home is the sky and the music never dies. ‘Nuff said.”
