Stepping aside from his well-established role as Moonshine's funky breaks master-mixer, DJ John Kelley joins forces with Brian Saitzyk to depart into down-tempo ambient territory. Chilled, shuffling beats snap and slide hypnotically behind a warm ecosystem of radiant chording, pristine strings, and soul-stirring substance. A spiritual take on deep electronica.
The partnership between Eastern Sun’s Brian Saitzyk and DJ John Kelley brings you a creatively unique and spiritual sound in their CD, “In Emptiness.” So, open your ears to the relaxing sounds of this prodigal duo’s first debut album, “In Emptiness…” Known for creating the sounds that define what West Coast breakbeats are, Los Angeles native, DJ John Kelley is one of North America’s foremost breaks DJs. His foray into ambient electronica has provided a point of interest for his longtime fans as well as the electronic music media. While attending a number of Moontribe desert gatherings, DJ John Kelley, along with current label partner David deLaski, met Eastern Sun’s creator Brian Saitzyk. Brian, a born and raised native of Venice, California, was raised in a Buddhist household and was allowed to follow his creative passion of music. His constant experimentation with electronics combined with his exploring spirit has resulted in some very innovative music in a dizzying variety of genres. While quiet in nature, Brian’s love for Psychedelic Trance got him out DJ’ing clubs and Mojave Desert parties. After Brian, David, and John met at the Moontribe gatherings, seeing an opportunity for some synergy, David encouraged Brian and John to get together on some tracks. John Kelley, known as a break beat DJ touring with Crystal Method and Orbital, was looking for a creative outlet and it became apparent that a slower tempo worked well for the pair. When deLaski heard their first downtempo track, “Rapture at Sea,” he had to put it out. “Rapture at Sea” appeared on the Ball of Waxx “Groove Closet” compilation, and was the number one requested song on KCRW at the end of June 2004. BPM Magazine picked “Rapture at Sea” as a “rare beauty that will literally have you hitting the repeat button countless times in a row.” Accolades also followed from DJ Garth, Raul Campos among others. Eastern Sun and John Kelley also created a second track for the compilation called “Playa Love” which has been licensed for the Ubisoft videogame “Playboy: The Mansion.” Raul Campos from KCRW (aka RC1) was so intrigued by “Rapture at Sea,” he asked the duo to produce the downtempo version of a house track he had just cut with the Supreme Beings of Leisure. The single also includes a remix by Static Avenger and is releasing on Campos’ Binary Soul label. Now with the Ball of Waxx debut full-length, “In Emptiness,” Eastern Sun presents a deep, soulful chord in the world of electronic music as BPM compares it to works by “Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, and Future Sound of London.” Rising higher by the hour, Eastern Sun brings light and warmth out of the darkness with innovative style and sonic beauty.
