The viola da gamba is one heck of an old instrument, so it's proper that Elisabeth Reed doesn't try to force any newfangled tricks on it. Rather, Reed's lush takes on Haydn and other classicists evoke the pieces' original earthy delight, a sensation that many newer interpretations (and newer instruments) carelessly elide.
I'm an Early Music adherent, playing cello and viola da gamba in several ensembles.
