Editor's review

Maybe we and trip-hop just needed a little distance. The hot '90s genre had endured a downturn in recent years, but Torrini and others are bringing back a more spare and subtle form. The singer's new "Me and Armini" is a downright lovely outing, mixing sharp observation with blurry beatscapes.

Biography

Following her critically acclaimed albums Love In The Time Of Science and her Rough Trade debut Fisherman's Woman, the forthcoming Me And Armini (release date September 9th) sees her working once again with her long time producer/collaborator Dan Carey, resulting in what we feel is destined to be one of the loveliest albums of 2008.

Me And Armini is a hugely ambitious and aspirational pop record with Emiliana's soaring voice centre stage, bolstered by a rich gamut of musical styles. From the summery skank of the title track to the surging, breathless "Jungle Drum" and the yearning "Big Jumps" and much more in between, Me And Armini is a truly fantastic album. For those not in the know, the pedigree paring of Torrini's songwriting and Carey's sonic alchemy (currently being put to work on the new Franz Ferdinand and recent Hot Chip records) has previously combined to world-beating effect when they co-wrote/produced a number-one hit for Kylie Minogue in the shape of the huge-selling pop smash "Slow" as well as contributing "Gollum's Song" to the multi-platinum soundtrack to The Lord Of The Rings.

Emiliana Torrini is half Icelandic, half Italian. She grew up in Iceland in a town outside Reykjavik and spent her childhood summers with her grandmother in the far east of Iceland out in the wild, spacious countryside. Her teen summers were spent in Germany with her Italian uncle. Her worldwide debut album, 1999's Love In The Time Of Science, was produced by Roland Orzabal of Tears For Fears and was a gorgeous electronic trip-hop influenced album. Her second album, Fisherman's Woman was a little closer to Nick and included the song "Honeymoon Child" written by Smog's Bill Callahan, who Emiliana spent some time writing with in the US. Fisherman's Woman's theme was loss – sometimes dripping with sadness but more frequently imbued with almost magical optimism.

Me and Armini will be released by Rough Trade in the US on September 9th, and marks another new chapter in Emiliana's impressive career.
