Erlend Bratlie's music can be called "big band" only in the most literal sense: it uses a lot of instruments. With unconventional arrangements, liberal soloing policies, and sweeping soundscapes that rarely hit forte, the Norwegian bandleader's ensemble has staged a peaceful coup d'etat against the lockstep democracy of the Basie administration.
