Producer Brian Deck, abetter of Isaac Brock and Sam Beam, has found a new brooding bard in young Furman. On his Deck-helmed debut, the Chicagoan offers a raw and ragged antipop for those who like their indie music intimate but not falsely pretty.
Twenty-year-old Chicago native Ezra Furman received the greatest Bar Mitzvah present ever. At a mere thirteen he was given a guitar, and ever since he has been creating memorable and melodic songs with reckless abandon. Ezra's fantastic tales challenge your worldview while pulsing with a frenetic rock energy that could make even the dead dance. He tops it off with his innate eccentricity that would do Devendra Banhart, or even David Byrne proud.
Perhaps it was this very blend of qualities that got the attention of producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine). The lauded studio ace just completed Ezra's debut album soon to be released on indie label Minty Fresh Records.
Ezra Furman starts his tour in Chicago playing a solo show on June 19 at Schubas. Later he will be joined by his band, the Harpoons, for the rest of the tour. Yes, the band does include bassist Job Mukkada who, when not playing music, is the much feared professional wrestler: Standing Goat with Heart of Fire.
