Call this New Zealand group "dub reggae," but only by default. FFD plays with that genre's gentle grooves and expansive reverb, but it layers in soft keys, acid jazz riffs, and soul-crooning straight from '70s Motown. It's what being cool sounds like.

Fat Freddy’s Drop are a seven piece band hailing from Wellington, New Zealand whose rich sound draws on south pacific soul, roots reggae, jazz, and bass heavy production. The album is mellow, warm and inviting. With a uniquely pure sound as textured as it is organic, it’s no wonder that Based on a True Story won Best Album in renowned DJ Gilles Peterson’s World Wide Awards.

The appeal of Fat Freddy’s Drop is that their music is so accessible – their expressive sound piquing the ear of DJs and masses alike. The album broke records by being the first independently distributed album to hit number 1 in the New Zealand Album Charts and stayed there for another 11 weeks, breaking the longest running record at the top and selling over 135,000 copies worldwide. Even the media was blown away; iDJ called Based on a True Story “simply superb” and “utterly, utterly beautiful” and Flux truthfully described it as “a beautifully rich and soothing debut.”
Every track on the album positively glows with sun-dappled horns, heartfelt vocals, and basslines that resonate with an impossible amount of soul. With a name like Fat Freddy’s Drop, it’s no surprise that their music goes deep and resounds with a big fat bottom.
