Biography

Flatirons Jazz features Kurt Eherenman and Keith Ley on saxophones and flutes, John Lumia on guitar, Tom Bartling on bass and Alex Eherenman on drums.  The group has been together for four years, which shows in their relaxed confidence as they tackle the fastest Parker tunes or the soulful strains of the prettiest ballads.

Aside from concert-style performances, Flatirons Jazz is also available to perform at wedding receptions, corporate events and meetings, bar mitzvahs and family get-togethers, parties, festivals and anywhere else quality music is required.

Recently, Flatirons Jazz has performed for Ball Aerospace's Christmas Party at the Denver Convention Center in front of an audience of 2000 people.  The band also played last fall with internationally renowned jazz recording star, Greg Abate, at an improvisation seminar and concert.  Marguerite Juenemann,  formerly of Rare Silk and The Benny Goodman Orchestra, has joined Flatirons Jazz on several occasions in the past, most recently at the Boulder Creek Festival and The Grand County Artists Series.  Flatirons Jazz has also provided musical entertainment at a number of functions for the Rocky Mountain Center for the Musical Arts.

Kurt Eherenman
Alto, Soprano, Tenor Saxophones and Flute
Kurt started playing saxophone in the 4th grade. Continued all the way through high school, earning lead chairs in concert and jazz band and all state honors on the way. In college, Kurt played lead alto on the top bands at the University of Colorado, Metro State College and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. During both high school and college, he was also instrumental in several independent jazz and funk efforts.

In addition to this gig, Kurt continues to play lead alto with the Colorado Jazz Workshop, a 20 piece jazz orchestra and a Zimbabwean style marimba band known as Kutandara.

Keith Ley
Tenor Saxophone, Flute and Alto Flute
A relatively recent transplant to the Denver area, Keith relocated to Colorado from northern New Jersey in September of 1997. Originally starting on tenor sax in grade school, and playing saxophone and clarinet in a variety of high school, community, and parade bands, Keith is well versed in both jazz and orchestral music. Becoming more serious about music since graduating college he has studied with several fine reedmen including; Charlie Librizzi, a woodwind specialist and New York area studio musician, Scottish born baritone saxophonist and anchor man for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Joe Temperly, and recording artist Scott Krietzer, best known for his background horn arrangements and flute work for the popular fusion group, Spyro Gyra. Presently Keith is under the tutelage of versatile and well-traveled Denver based reedman Mark Harris, in addition to performing with the Colorado Jazz Workshop and Flatirons Jazz.

John Lumia
Guitar
Originally from New York City, John has played guitar for almost 35 years in a variety of styles from R&R, Pop, Country, Folk, concentrating on Jazz for the last 20 years. John has studied with Dale Bruning and Mitch Chmara and has recently played with the Colorado Jazz Workshop and the Boulder Big Band. In New York City, he played lead guitar and vocals with Toes In The Grass, a group performing original songs. His major jazz guitar influences are Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, and Joe Pass, among others. John also gives private guitar instruction in many styles.

Tom Bartling
Bass
Tom graduated from the Musician's Institute GIT program in 1993. He has been playing Bass and Guitar for much longer than that and has a firm grounding in many styles of music. (And a tentative toehold on reality) Chemical imbalances in his brain are restored on a regular basis, thus enabling him to be a harmless, productive member of society. He is friendly, but painfully shy.

Alex Eherenman
Drums
Being Kurt's son means no extra favors. The kid is talented and the driving force behind the band. Alex shows uncanny feel for all types of music, despite his years.

Alex is currently the premier drummer for the Centaurus High School Jazz Ensemble 1, as well as for his own rock group, The Impediments, and is also a percussionist for the Zimbabwean style marimba band known as Kutandara.
