The Motown-fueled Northern Soul movement of the '60s obviously left quite a mark on Frank Popp to create an ensemble that staggeringly recreates that vibe. Most of his production resembles a soundtrack to an intercontinental James Bond love affair, endangered by dirty politics, venomous villains emerging from clouds of second-hand smoke, and mysterious women of his past. If you can picture a focused Ursula 1000 mating with Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, you've quite got the right idea, dollface.
With a strong dedication and a brandnew single entitled "The World Is Waiting", the Frank Popp Ensemble returns to action and the awaiting for the new material and second album "Touch And Go" finally comes to an end. With "Touch And Go", The Frank Popp Ensemble present themselves as a much more mature band and group of composers: iconographic in design, intuitive and non-flourished in the music. Still creating as much euphoria on the floor as before but being more focused on the sound issue(s), more resided to Indie- Rock and Garage-Soul than just to the dancefloor, which can especially be witnessed by the growing impact of lead & rhythm-guitars. This is also the blueprint for the upcoming album: more song than track, more vocals than instrumentals, more depth in arrangements than just programming, on WORLD IS WAITING this Pop(p) now simply sounds more british than ever before! Good old Manchester-Rave from The Stone Roses to The Happy Mondays or The Charlatans, easily implementated by singer Sam Leigh-Brown with her native Manchester roots!
12 brandnew songs, 45 minutes, "Touch And Go" - but still it's not that easy, because the second album of the Frank Popp Ensemble does not unclasp you that quickly again - and in particular it doesn't let you GO at all! For the very reason that: it TOUCHES, inspires and works, leaves intense emotional impressions and moments, the songs stay in your head and ear, Pop(p) that really goes into depth, far below the belt - namely into the legs! "Touch And Go" is the contemporary Garage-Rock / Northern-Soul / R'n'B Album from an experienced Club- and mature Dance Act - and the other way around! Simply because the roots of the Frank Popp Ensemble have always been in the club/dance music scene. And contemporary simply due to the fact that the Frank Popp Ensemble again manages to let Northern Soul, early R&B, Garage Rock, Beat and Soundtrack-inspired music sound likewise authentic and timeless up to date - this is the way 21st century Soul in 2005 has to sound:
Motown-inspired grooves in "Gettin' Down" meet classic R'n'B- arrangements in the song "Leave Me Alone", soundtracks such as "Slaughter At Primrose Hill" meet ballads like the incomparable Esther Phillips cover "Just Say Goodbye" and the groundbreaking "All I Need". Good old Manchester Rave cultivates "The World Is Waiting" and the B3-Hammond crasher "Don't Waste My Time" towards the Garage Rock of "Touch & Go", the orchestral Fuzz-Pop of "Business & Pleasure" and the rather 90s sounding Acid Jazz-grooves of "Psychedelic Girl" with guest appearancers of two outstanding unique recording artists: ex-Corduroy Ben Addison / Ben Human as guest-vocalist and Xaver Fischer with a splendid Wurlitzer piano- solo - the variety of genres and styles ist the secret that drives the spirit of "Touch And Go"!
After three extremely succesful radio singles - "Hip Teens" and "Love Is On Our Side" each made it into the german top 10 radio-airplaycharts and the ballad "Breakaway" into the top 70 - "The World Is Waiting" will continue this tradition once more successfully. The video for "The World Is Waiting" was realised by Vogelsänger / V2 Young Film Unit and director / storyboard-writer Philip Schubert from Düsseldorf: the fascinating world of boxing as a beautiful black-and-white ballad with attractive 3D animations.
