Editor's review

Those who have only heard Neil in the more regimented studio setting will be astounded at the rough-hewn power of his 1970 Fillmore East sets. Aided by Crazy Horse, Young tucks into loose-limbed riffs and spiritual jams more characteristic of The Band than Neil the moody songman.

Biography

Neil Young & Crazy Horse's concerts on March 6th and 7th, 1970 at New York's Fillmore East have been the subject of legend for decades. The nights featured Young with the original lineup of Crazy Horse: Danny Whitten (guitar, vocals), Ralph Molina (drums, vocals), Billy Talbot (bass) and Jack Nitzsche (electric piano), performing at the very peak of their powers. Those two nights are among the only officially recorded shows of the band with these members, and as the debut release of the Neil Young Archives Performance Series, the album Live At The Fillmore East will be available November 14, 2006 on Reprise Records.

Live At The Fillmore East has been the subject of devotion among Neil Young followers since the shows themselves in 1970, when Young and Whitten's dueling guitars were credited as one of the best match-ups in rock history. As heard on these six songs from those concerts, they perfectly illustrate exactly why. Joined by producer-arranger legend Jack Nitzsche on electric piano, a sometimes member of Crazy Horse, the Fillmore East shows are a landmark in Young's unequaled musical career.
