The Marvin Gaye original produced by Smokey Robinson in 1965 was the SOUND OF YOUNG AMERICA aka MOTOWN MAGIC. Here the life has been electronically strangled out of this classic tune. George Clinton, Santana, Sly and the rest must have dozed off whilst the computer drivelled on.
DO YOURSELF A BIG, BIG FAVOUR: Listen NOW to the Marvin Gaye ORIGINAL BODY-PUMPING TUNE and it will Shake You & Wake You.

Can't fault the funk; can't fault the swing. Only weakness of this number is having to fight distortion techniques when trying to get a sense of the meaning of the lyrics. Unless you believe, along with Marshall McLuhan, that the medium is the message, you may want to actually hear those words, and relate them to the mood set by the music. The best technique is always invisible, an apparently effortless contribution to presenting your material in the best possible way. Apart from the vocal distortion, everything else is technically and musically A-1; that vocal treatment lets the whole down slightly. What a pity, because that is one wicked groove.
