If the guy from Offspring reinvented his career as an electronic musician and his favorite band ever was the Rapture, he would sound exactly like the Ghostland Observatory, a duo from the hipster haven of Austin, Texas. The music, produced by Thomas Turner, plods alongside pal Aaron Behrens' yelps with an eerie echo that's both indie and slightly goth.
ONLY TEXAS COULD CLAIM SOMETHING AS IMPROBABLE AS THIS: SWEATY, RAW-BONED AND DIRECT FROM THE FUTURE; COMMITTED TO ELECTRONICS, STUCK ON BIG BEATS, YET UNMISTAKABLY POWERED BY ROCK’N’ ROLL.
In just over two years Ghostland Observatory has recorded three albums in their south Austin studio, and 'Robotique Majestique,' due in March, continues hammering loudly away at the safe and the soft and the easily defined. What began as a challenge between two friends (Aaron Behrens plays guitar, sings and commands the stage. Thomas Turner produces, plays drums and synths) has by now put Ghostland on stage before audience from LA to London. That exposure sparked an old-fashioned radio phenomenon, powered by enthusiastic support from Seattle's influential KEXP. PBS’ acclaimed Austin City Limits featured the group in December 2007. Plenty of opportunities have come the group’s way, but in sticking with their DIY ethos that has helped them to sell an unprecedented amount of records for a group so fiercely indepdendent, their new album, like its predecessors, will be issued, like its predecessors, on Ghostland’s own Trashy Moped label.
"Dancin' On My Grave" is the first taste of the brilliant 'Robotique Majestique' and a stellar example of what makes Ghostland Observatory a stand out from the rest of the pack--electronic and fiercely dance friendly, but with a soul and personality of some of rock music's most classic groups. "Club Soda" shows off the authentic understanding of the intricacies of creating an instrumental dance gem, while the Let There Be Vinyl remix of "Dancin' On My Grave" is fit to make clubs and airwaves explode with it's massive, monster hook. Oh yes... Ghostland Observatory has only just begun. We like ALL TRACKS.
