What's green inside and rocks all over? Give up? It's Connecticut party machine Green Inside! Their soulful grooves suggest the Wallflowers covering an obscure Journey B-side. Their ability to impose succinct Beatles pop structures on their jam-band free riffs leaves you feeling good inside.
In an effort to make describing sounds easier, music typically gets lumped into a genre. Metal, funk, emo, screamo, folk, hardcore, etc., all have come to describe a certain sound and style of music, even if the artists that get lumped into those categories have widely diverse sounds from each other. What about those artists who just play MUSIC, whose variety of influences and inspirations can be heard, but converge in a way that renders their music just that? MUSIC. New Haven, CT-based Green Inside is such a band. With influences ranging from Counting Crows to The Beatles to Led Zeppelin and more, Green Inside creates compelling music with honest lyrics that is accessible to a wide audience. With a "three chords and the truth" attitude, the band has created a soulful pop-rock sound that fans say sounds like Green Inside. Seth Thulin (vocals, acoustic and electric guitars), Steve Tobey (drums, percussion and vocals), Gerry Giaimo (acoustic and electric guitars, vocals) and Tim Sway (electric and upright bass) come from diverse musical backgrounds, which, when stirred properly, creates an interesting, tasty brew.
Inspired by the desire to just write and sing songs with his acoustic guitar, Thulin began performing at local coffeehouses. He occasionally employed the talents of former Green Inside members Rich Mirakian on guitar and Lorin Pellegrino on bass, both of whom performed with Thulin in previous bands. In the spring of 2000 the Seth Adam Band was rounded out by Boston native Tobey who had recently left a band and relocated to Connecticut. After rehearsing in early summer of 2000, the band began performing live later that season. In January 2001 the band officially changed its name to reflect that the band was a team effort, and not the result of one person. As for the name itself, Tobey and Thulin enjoyed "Green" while Pellegrino was enamored with "Inside." In their infinite wisdom and creativity, or maybe the result of ingesting too much homemade wine, they used both. By late summer/early fall 2002 the lineup had changed. Mirakian's position had been filled by Giaimo in July of 2003. Pellegrino, whose position had initially been filled by Mike Kraft, was ultimately replaced by Tim Sway in August 2003.
Green Inside has sold and given away nearly 10,000 combined copies of their three 4-song CDs: Live In Studio A, Red and Blue. They are currently writing and recording new material with contributions from the talented Giaimo and Sway for their first full length CD. The band has performed an average of 150-200 dates a year throughout CT, MA, RI, VT, PA and NJ including headlining gigs at the Block Island Music Festival (Block Island, RI) and the Clearwater Festival (Asbury Park, NJ) and opened for national acts King's X, Graham Colton and The Toasters. Green Inside has been featured in The Record Journal (Meriden, CT), Connecticut Post (Milford CT), The Inside Connection (New York, NY) and Asbury Park Press (Asbury Park NJ) publications. In addition, the band was a Northeast regional finalist in the Soul City Café Music Quest, a national competition where the winner went on to open for Jewel on her 2003 U.S. tour.
With confident songwriting, talent, and experience under their belts, Green Inside is looking forward to creating their best music yet and just enjoying the ride. The band agrees that above all, they want this to be a fun experience for everyone involved... the band, the audience, etc. Just listen to the MUSIC.
