Don't let this Central PA blues pianist deceive you. Burgess can do tender and straight-laced: especially with his sweet vocals and gentle touch on the keys. But sooner or later, his swinging soul comes out, which is where he shines. In contrast to his flamboyant genre-mates, Burgess makes boogie woogie sound (dare we say it?) almost subtle.
Greg Burgess has been playing the piano since, as he describes it, he first felt the pangs of unrequited love.? The Billtown Blue Notes, of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, has said this about the versatile and very emotive piano player: "Burgess is the area's top blues pianist, and his sly singing is perfect for the old blues and jive tunes in his repertoire."?? Burgess grew up in Central Pennsylvania where, after roaming the country for several years, he again makes his home. He has played with various bands, including in the 80's as a sideman with Rochester, New York, bluesman Joe Beard. Greg Burgess currently performs with drummer Steve Mitchell and bassist Andy Seal at several venues in Central Pennsylvania.? The Trio, Burgess, Mitchell, and Seal, performs a wide variety of jazz and blues tunes.?? In June of 2004 the Trio was a headliner at the 14th Annual Billtown Blues Festival in Hughesville, Pennsylvania, and has released two CDs, "Brother Blues and Me" and "Blues for Your Stocking" (Friday Night Records), featuring many original compositions by Burgess. Burgess has also released a CD of solo performances, "I Am Not Alone," recorded by George Graham of WVIA-FM, Wilkes-Barre, and orignally broadcast on Graham's Homegrown program.? He has also released CD's with his wife, "Tunes from the Family Parlor," and with the blues band Cruel Four Days, "Dear John."
