Biography

HARMONIC 313 is Mark Pritchard’s latest incarnation, an enigmatic producer who over the years has been involved in a humbling array of acts such as Global Communication, Jedi Knights and Harmonic 33 as well as going under the aliases of Troubleman, Link and Reload. Mark’s significant contribution to the underground is self-explanatory and so it is with excitement that Warp is to embark on yet another musical voyage with him, and herald in a new chapter of this stellar discography.

By subtly adding a ‘1’ to his new moniker, under Harmonic 313, Mark turns his attention to his continuing love affair with Detroit (“313” of course being the telephone area-code for the Motor City). Apparent on listening to ‘EP1’, a love for J. Dilla and the Detroit hip hop sounds he influenced from the late 80’s onwards is apparent, impact of which helped define an era in America. In synchronicity with this of course are strains of Detroit Techno, 80s electronic music, soundtracks and new wave, all of which are heard here as well. Under this new name, Mark was also keen to explore the relationship between old and new: referencing UK driven bass music, Grime and Dubstep and the interplay between these young forms and their .
And the result is a fresh beat driven EP that is rich and warm, resonating the vibrant Detroit sound.

The entire visual and indeed verbal concept of H313 is intriguingly color coded, as reflected in the artwork of EP1, a word problem in its entirety which must be broken to reveal the track titles. Refreshing in presentation while echoing the legendary graphic experiments of Factory Records designer Peter Saville, those not afraid of a challenge can crack the code and be rewarded with a free exclusive track online.
