American ears were just getting accustomed to U.K. grime; these Aussie rappers predate that scene, but they'll still probably surprise statesiders. This is rap as something big, bouncy, and resilient, recalling U.S. styles with its organic instrumentals, but perhaps unique in its lack of cynicism.
Biography
The Outback isn't exactly known for its Hip Hop. Paul Hogan and the Croc Hunter? Sure. Aussie KRS Ones and Biggies? Hardly. But try telling that to Hilltop Hoods, Australia's highest-selling rap group, and an undeniable force in the international undie hip hop community. Grinding since '91, the trio of Suffa, Pressure and DJ Debris have become veterans in a scene we North Americans know very little of. But with the release of The Hard Road, that's about to change. Thanks to their fourth full-length, The Hoods have snatched up a clutch of ARIAs, landed a second platinum plaque, and stared making inroads into our world.
