Editor's review

From Northern California comes Hollowfall, wielding their melancholic brand of progressive metal, with emotional upheavals of heavy, brooding guitar, intricate drumming, keyboards and the dynamic singing of front man James Parrish. Since 2002, the band has been getting noticed around the Sacramento area for their epic songwriting and notoriously intense live shows.

Biography

Since the band debuted in November 2002, Hollowfall has captivated crowds looking for a passionate and dramatic musical experience. The group, hailing from the small town of Grass Valley, California, plays extensively throughout Northern California.

Hollowfall is more than just a collaboration of musicians. It is a circle of friends, a family, and an idea formed from the hearts of five distinct individuals. The varied backgrounds of each musician combine to create a unique hard rock sound that is filled with contrast and the blending of musical styles.

Front man and vocalist James Parrish draws from his background in local punk bands to bring out an energetic, angst filled performance. People are often absorbed by his passionate and maniacal stage act, which usually involves him writhing around on the floor. To add contrast and dynamics to the songs, James shows his more vulnerable side with his soulful and quiet melodies, sometimes dying down to a whisper.

On violin and female vocals is Michaela King. As a classically trained violinist and theater actor, she brings even more beauty and melancholy to the groups sound. Her haunting vocal and violin harmonies bring a feminine and classical feel to the songs at some points, and add to the heavy, dark, and epic sound that is Hollowfall.

Adding color to the mix is keyboard player Sean Conroy. Sean uses traditional instrumentation such as symphonic strings and piano as well as more modern synthesizers that are controlled three dimensionally by hand movements. Sean comes from a background of high school and college orchestras, using this experience to create the epic symphonic style in many of Hollowfall?s songs.

Ryan Cirino brings everything together with his highly technical, yet self taught drumming style. He draws much of his inspiration from the complicated styles of amazing drummers like Tool's Danny Carey. Ryan understands the power behind every rise and fall of intensity in each crescendo and decrescendo. From pounding heavy and complicated tribal beats, to orchestral symbol swells and technical hi-hat rhythms, he adds to the mood of each moment.

Providing the backbone for the group is Josh Coleman on guitar. He produces a creative sound with an array of digital effects, and his unique dual bass/guitar amplification. Josh plays a wide range of styles, from quiet and refined classical guitar picking, to rhythmic hard rock riffs.

Hollowfall has completed their first full length "the collapse", recorded independently at Pus Cavern in Sacramento, California. The group is currently working on a new album
