Editor's review

If Bright Eyes's Conor Oberst were 20 years wiser and two states more southerly, Howdy! is the band he'd be fronting. Though hailing from the Bay Area, Howdy! plays a stunning folk-country style that's Deep South all through, dominated by glowing slide guitars, backwoods truths, and quivering, utterly sincere vocals.

Biography

Howdy! is one of the hottest bands to hit the Bay Area! Bending musical rules and drawing from a range of styles including bluegrass, reggae, and insurgent country, Howdy!'s unique blend of original homegrown and homefried music is best described as "Outlaw Folk" music. Howdy! showcases the dual songwriting firepower of guitarist Dave Nanstad (the Aquatic Monster Bombs, Wanted in Ten States) and mandolin player Sean Hancock (Second Set, Kingstreet, Pacific Groove) alongside the thumping rhythms of upright bassist Aspen Stevenson (5 Tons of Rhythm, the Jon Wood Experience, the Speakeasy Jug Band). These veterans, with a combined history of over 30 years playing on the Bay Area and Sacramento music scenes, bring a flair, chemistry and intensity to the stage. When newly formed in summer of 2004, and with one rehearsal under their belt, Howdy! wowed audiences with four gigs during a space of three weeks. These early performances revealed a powerful chemistry that, blended with the unrelenting musicianship and sheer songwriting power of the band, spoke of greater things to come. Surprising even themselves, Howdy! decided to get serious and buckled down in Bent Steel studios to record their recently released demo. Driving their beat-up pickup trucks at breakneck speed onstage, Howdy is excited to be packing the house at a venue near you. Contact Howdy! today!
