Editor's review

Whether your medieval folk knowledge runs deep, or only as far as Tull's Ian Anderson, Saturnalia Trio is sure to win you over. That's thanks to a mix of plummy troubadour melodies--what '70s English rock copped--and real world-music eclecticism.

Biography

Saturnalia Trio performs a mix of Medieval & Renaissance tunes and original songs inspired by early music and world music. Formed in 1995 by Daniel Crommie (Group Du Jour, Echo System) and Leslie Gray, Saturnalia Trio released "Salterello, Psaltery and Song" as a cassette-only album in 1997, followed by by "The Juturna Codex" in 2000 which featured percussionist Bruce Gelman. In 2000, Elizabeth Nicholson (Celtic Harp, vox) and Paul Evans (percussion, flute, saxophone) joined and "Mercury Rising" was recorded and released in 2002. "Of Mosaic & Muse" followed Elizabeth's departure and is probably the strongest collection of tunes and songs up to this point. Harpist Tracey Brown joined in 2006 and the group started recording "Hummingbirds", which will be released this summer of 2008 and includes a wealth of new songs. Daniel Crommie sings and plays six-string dulcimer, buche, mandolins, flutes and recorders. Leslie Gray plays violin and viola and sings. Paul Evans plays percussion and flute. Tracey Brown plays Celtic harp and sings.
