Editor's review

Synth-skittering electro-pop gets accused of lots of things; whimsy is not usually among them. On her debut, "Unopened Box," Ontario's Eves somehow converts a stack of dance-floor loops into the stuff of curious dream pop, like something an especially pensive robot would record after a breakup.

Biography

Hunter Eves was born in a cubicle farm, nursed by a waterfall, raised by a swingset and trained as a kamikaze pianist. She has been singing for longer than she can remember. Her singing has caused great ethereal storms but she cannot seem to stop herself. In her songs she is hiding in a cubby under the stairs, drifting out to sea on a melting iceberg or collecting swamp life in a tic tac box aquarium. She also sings about people and the things they do to each other. In her writing she has a gift for distilling the infinite collisions of a random universe into subtle turns of phrase and inflecting them with engaging sincerity. Her piano playing borders on baroque with melodic complexity but her voice is pure, smooth and elemental. She is also known for her imaginative and fascinating experiments with electronic sounds. She uses all these tools with splashes of tenderness and fury to craft the millennial pop song. Hunter's debut full-length CD, Unopened Box, was released in September 2005.
