Editor's review of iHateSpam
Although not a silver bullet, iHateSpam works well enough to handle the majority of spam you receive. The program's generous 30-day trial works with a number of e-mail clients, including Outlook Express, IncrediMail, and Eudora.
The installation process walks you through the initial configuration for the e-mail clients and accounts it finds on your system. We tested the program in Outlook 2002 and found the toolbar it added easy to use, with buttons for marking e-mails as spam or not spam.
Little configuration is initially required, as the program learns over time how to improve its spam recognition based on how you mark your e-mail. It creates a quarantine folder where it puts all suspected spam, and you can check this folder and easily mark any false positives.
Likewise, when you mark any spam that gets through the program's filter, it automatically gets moved to the spam filter. During a two-week testing period, we found that iHateSpam caught the majority of our spam. It learned as we marked new spam, but it always seemed that some spam got through as spammers changed tactics to get around our filters.
This game of keep-up does afford the pleasure of letting you feel like you're actively engaged in the fight. The filter was strict enough to catch newsletters from e-commerce sites we didn't really consider spam, but it was easy to train the program not to trash them. Although not perfect, iHateSpam is easy to use and will reduce your spam volume.
