The composition style of this young Canadian reads like an amalgam of his various performing and listening interests. Over the prim formalism of Romantic piano, Habibi weaves a mix of swooping, neo-Dvorak strings and a contemporary artist's readiness to modulate.
Born in 1985, Iman Habibi started studying classical piano at age 11 under the instructions of Azad Hakimrabet and Farman Behboud . In 2003 he moved to Canada and continued his trainings under Ellen Silverman and John Glofcheskie. Since his arrival in Canada he has been the recepient of numerous academic and musical awards and scholarships and has been actively composing for films and professional classical ensembles. His compositions combine the romantic style of late 19th century with techniques and harmonic language of modern music. He is also interested in music of other cultures; as a result he frequently uses cliches of eastern european and middle-eastern music in his pieces. He currently resides in Vancouver, BC, and studies piano (under Sara Davis Buechner) and composition at the University of British Columbia, performing classical music along with his own compositions in piano and chamber music recitals.
