This Oslo-based guitarist plays with a similar combination of rambling spirit and harmonic grounding that distinguishes Philadelphia's Pat Martino. But beneath his coolly contemporary lines, JC's tunes brim with a swashbuckling old-world swing that would find him a home in any Django Reinhardt-era speakeasy.
My name is Brynjar Boe, and I am a 24 year old jazz-guitarist from Oslo, Norway. I play music inspired by guitarists like Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola, Jan Garbarek, etc. I am currently living in Oslo, Norway, studiyng music at the university in Oslo, Blindern, where I am going for a bachelor degree in music. I started playing classical piano as a child, having my own father as a piano teacher. In my teens, I bought myself a cheap electric guitar and started playing rock?n roll. It was my elder brother, also playing the guitar, who introduced me to the world of jazz/fusion, lending me records of groups like mezzoforte, Chick Corea electric band, etc. I was immediately strucked by this music, and started ripping off licks and lines trying to sound like a jazz-guitarist. This led me toward a deeper search in jazz, and I started listening to records of Charlie Parker, Wes Montegomery, Miles Davis, Charlie Christian, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Keith Jarret, Pat Metheny etc. etc. I play in a jazz quartet here in Oslo, and I compose whenever I?m not playing. I am influenced by highly different artists, and for me I think that is a good thing. I try to sound different for each day, but still sound as myself.
