Editor's review

After studying under a master pianist as a boy, Joakim eventually decided he loved electronic music. Ultimately, that was good for us, as his French dance music is both tasteful and compelling, as if a subdued Rinocerose collaborated with a snooty minimal techno artist from Detroit.

Biography

Buzz has also been building for the first live shows from JOAKIM and his group the ECTOPLASMIC BAND (JOAKIM: machines, keys, guitar, vocals; MARK KERR: drums; MAXIME DELPIERRE: guitar; and JUAN DEGUILLEBON: bass). Plans are already in the works to bring the band to New York for an exclusive show around release date. A full tour will follow in early summer. All this is hardly an overnight sensation for JOAKIM who has been recording for quite some time.

He first started to play piano at age six, studying with master musician Abdel Rahman El Bacha. In his teens he became absorbed with indie rock and labels like Warp and Mo Wax. His first album TIGER SUSHI under the name JOAKIM LONE SEXTET was an abstract jazzy sample laden affair released in 1999 on small indie Future Talk. His second album saw him mature, reaching a broader audience with a more electronic based album FANTOMES released in 2003 on new home Versatile (also home to CHATEAU FLIGHT). FANTOMES saw him reaching a broader audience and also saw him start to experiment with rock.

TIGER SUSHI is the name for the respected label that he's been running since 2002. It's also a respected, often used online portal dedicated to quality Music from Jazz to Hip Hop, from Leftfielf Pop to Electronic Music. Tigersushi has released music from CLUSTER, JOHN TEJADA, MAURICE FULTON, PSYCHIC TV, MU, MINISTRY, SOFT CELL, MATERIAL, THE GUN CLUB, GINA X, METRO AREA and many others. Joakim says "Tigersushi's goal is to foster quality music, to make crossovers from the Underground to the Mainstream, from the Past to the Future, to join the dots between Artists, Records, Labels and Genres."

Over the last few years JOAKIM has also made a strong name for himself as a remixer whose every mix hits the bulls eye and leaves traces. Check his popular remixes for the likes of AIR, ANNIE, TIGA, FISHERSPOONER, A GUY CALLED JACK (Get Physical), DETROIT GRAND PUBAS, and his most recent remix for ANTENNA which some press in Europe are calling the "remix of the year." JOAKIM will be touring with his live band and also as a DJ. JOAKIM is a respected DJ with regular appearances at such respected spots as Fabric in London. His DJing is as eclectic as his label and influences would lead you to believe. A brand new promotional-only JOAKIM FLAVOR MIX for !K7 will be available for website, blog and radio use in February.

Another side of his DJ persona can be discovered by checking the white label only re-edits he's released under the alias JIMI BAZZOUKA that include new takes on songs like WINGS "Let 'Em In," the ROLLING STONES "Hot Stuff" and JIMMY CASTOR BUNCH "Troglodyte." JOAKIM also works as a producer in 2007 he'll be producing an album for group PONI HOAX.
