Editor's review

After the initial shock and awe surrounding nu-electro started to dwindle around 2004, the genre seemed to split into two kinds of producers: those who continued to milk the fashiony, oversexed theme, and those who got over themselves. Although New York trio Kudu's third release (but only worthwhile mention) is ridden with innuendo in spots ("Hot Lava" depicts an erupting volcano--you figure it out), they have somehow been able to effortlessly bridge sass and substance. Fronted by Sylvia Gordon --whose vocal quality has been compared to Siouxsie Sioux's--Kudu's dirty pop (something like a PG-13 Peaches meets Deee-lite) will likely piss off sterile rock critics, but thrill electronic music fans looking for a change of pace.

Biography

Kuduare the real deal. Known as a live force, on stage they are dark and raw and desperate. Beyond that, their pop potential has always been apparent to anyone with ears for song craft and eyes for charisma. Death of the Party confirms this perception. Death, their first record on Nublu Records, has a sense of fun lifted from Deee-Lite, ESG, church in rural Georgia and parades in New Orleans. Drummer, Deantoni Parks, is a child of the Deep South and singer, Sylvia Gordon, with a nomadic upbringing that led her across lines of class, race and culture.

Kudu belong to no music movement but have affinities with several of the leading currents in todayï¿?s music. They are connected to Nublu, the birthplace of Brazilian Girls and Wax Poetic. Like M.I.A. and Adult., they are a dance act that possesses the ï¿?not discoï¿? elements of smart lyrics, pop and style. They slot-in with the NYC post-punk dance revival a la LCD Soundsystem.

In short, Kuduare the band that many have been waiting for. They marry wicked voodoo rhythm to lucid pop expression. They are goth without being cold and boring. They are ï¿?disco not discoï¿? without being mired in the early 80s. Death of the Party appeals to dance music fans, post-punk fans, jazz fans, funk fans, goth fans, and pop music fans. A lot of people.
