Editor's review

After the initial shock and awe surrounding nu-electro started to dwindle around 2004, the genre seemed to split into two kinds of producers: those who continued to milk the fashiony, oversexed theme, and those who got over themselves. Although New York trio Kudu's third release (but only worthwhile mention) is ridden with innuendo in spots ("Hot Lava" depicts an erupting volcano--you figure it out), they have somehow been able to effortlessly bridge sass and substance. Fronted by Sylvia Gordon --whose vocal quality has been compared to Siouxsie Sioux's--Kudu's dirty pop (something like a PG-13 Peaches meets Deee-lite) will likely piss off sterile rock critics, but thrill electronic music fans looking for a change of pace.

Biography

KUDU triumphantly return with the release of their stunning remix album “BACK FOR MORE: A REMIX COLLECTION” out now on Nublu Records. Carefully compiled by the trio, the explosive 13-track anthology features over 70 minutes of energized selections including new and previously released tracks, rarities and masterful reconstructions. The band are also going to be playing a handful of shows in the city this summer, scroll down for dates. National dates TBA very soon!!!

“BACK FOR MORE” follows KUDU’s 2006 full-length “DEATH OF THE PARTY”; and much like its deliciously retro-modern predecessor, the sizzling set seamlessly navigates through a gritty urbana bursting with heavy neon-daubed grooves melding dark melodic synth-pop and twisted cabaret with primal electro-punk, slick deviant disco and pent-up glam rock creating an ideal soundtrack for heating up a summer party!

Throughout, vocalist/songwriter and Mistress of Ceremony Sylvia Gordon’s commanding erotically-charged vocals, provocative lyrics and razor-sharp delivery grip listeners in a soothing embrace against the poly-rhythmic primal beats of master drummer Deantoni “D” Parks and the menacing, bass-heavy groves of synth programmer Nick Kasper, which have been ingeniously re-crafted and re-modelled by some of their favorite producers and friends.

Available digitally, on cd and as 2 limited edition 12” EPs for DJs and vinyl junkies (each containing exclusive bonus mixes unavailable on the cd release), the album brilliantly frames and echoes the band’s expansive musical scope, eruptive fury and stylized art-pop sophistication. Their unique sound taps into the raw energy and twisted sonic explorations of SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES, THE CREATURES, ESG, pre-PURPLE RAIN era PRINCE, MISSING PERSONS, BOW WOW WOW and Detroit techno (circa ’91) creating a charismatic and gloriously decadent, “neon-pop” hybrid New York Press described as “raw, powerful, and darkly melodic- last-party-before-you-die music.”

“BACK FOR MORE” is a fitting tribute to the multi-talented outfit’s genre-hopping musical legacy which vibrantly illustrates why they remain darlings of New York’s underground music scene and a veritable force to reckon with attracting critical acclaim, a loyal cult following and the adoration of some of the most influential and established innovators in the music industry.

Over the past year alone, KUDU has worked with an impressive list of groundbreaking artists (both as collaborators and session musicians) including BASEMENT JAXX, THE MARS VOLTA, VELVET UNDERGROUND legend JOHN CALE, SPANK ROCK, ARMAND VAN HELDEN, SANTOGOLD, HESS IS MORE, ALICE SMITH, VERNON REID (of LIVING COLOR/YOHIMBE BROTHERS) and seminal New York post-punk/industrial outfit GRAY (JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT’s former band which includes VINCENT GALLO).

Most recently, Sylvia Gordon gained mass critical acclaim for her collaboration with pop mastermind MOBY. Gordon co-wrote and is the featured vocalist on “Last Night” the title track from Moby’s latest full-length (released April 1 on Mute), which has sold over 55,000 units in the US to date! She is tapped to guest on forthcoming releases from TELEPOPMUSIK, DROP THE LIME and FLOPPY SOUNDS (aka minimal house / German techno producer and Wave Music recording artist ROB RIVES).
