From humble beginnings as a quartet of indie rock underdogs to their present incarnation as a voracious and excitable quintet, Kudzu Wish have proved themselves to be anything but predictable. Last year’s split CD with Greensboro, NC cohorts Disband saw Kudzu blast the unexpected masses with a noisy, funky and dissonant hybrid of rock that was peppered with some impressive insights and a refreshing sense of humor to temper the emotion. Now comes the time for Reverse Hurricane.
Kudzu Wish’s latest offering is a document of a band that has gone through a significant evolution over the past year and a half. Produced by Russell Ellis and Nick Peterson at Polyphonic Audio in Chapel Hill, NC and mastered by the legendary Alan Douches at West Westside, the recording is more cohesive and embellished than past efforts, and the group is a tighter sounding unit than ever before. Thanks to multiple outings across the eastern US, endless nights in small vans and smaller practice spaces, and a true desire to make their strongest album to date, these ten tracks are among some of the most memorable sounds to come out of NC in quite awhile.
The ever-incorrigible Adam Thorn leads the charge with his soaring vocals and charred screams, while telling twisted tales of snowflakes and assassins, freight trains and warmongers, robots and creditors. Beneath it all is a blanket of disorienting technical guitar lines, vicious backing vocals, and a true allegiance to unexpected changes. With Reverse Hurricane Kudzu Wish have captured their animated live sound, and this storm makes El Nino look like a whiney toddler.
