Editor's review

Trumpeter Larry Williams plays a confident and familiar brand of West Coast jazz that has a foot in the past and eyes on the present. Obviously schooled on "Kind of Blue"-era Miles Davis (but what jazz musician isn't?), Williams is an accomplished soloist and composer whose output ranges from gentle ballads to up-tempo improv.

Biography

Larry Williams has made a life of thinking “outside of the box.” His trumpet heroes are as far ranging as Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard to Harry James, Doc Severinsen and Maurice Andre.

Originally from Orlando Florida, Larry Williams came to Los Angeles in l999, leaving behind an already celebrated career, which began early in life by winning many musical scholastic achievement awards. Among those accolades was holding principal trumpet in the Florida Youth Symphony, and all by the time he was 14.

While in Florida, Larry played and recorded with the best, including Ira Sullivan, Dave Liebman, Sam Rivers, Dizzy Gillespie, Danny Gottlieb, Nathan Page, Nat Adderley, George Mauro, Don Scaletta, Scott Whitfield, John Allred, Richard Drexler, and Mousey Alexander. Known throughout Central Florida as a headliner in his own right, Larry shared the spotlight with the likes of The Rippingtons, Richard Elliot, Special FX, David Benoit, Kevin Eubanks and many others, performing at events like the Kool Jazz Festival, Peabody Sunset Serenade, and the Orlando JazzFest.

Since coming to L.A. Larry has been involved in projects and performances alongside established jazzmen; Ernie Watts, Bill Watrous, Peter Erskine, Alan Pasqua, Brandon Fields, Shelly Berg, Bunny Brunel, Brian Auger, Eric Marienthal, Carl Saunders, and Bobby Shew.

With 7 recordings to his credit as leader, Larry will be showcasing his music here “on the West Coast” in an effort to further expand the fellowship of the great Jazz art form.

Larry’s latest release entitled, “The Bridge” was recorded using an all L.A. band and is his hottest to date.

All About Jazz reviewer Dan McClanaghan says, Williams is one of those pro musicians with a wide range of experience- familiar with the American Songbook. Indeed, his own composition "The Sentimental Way You Are" is a beautiful song, like a long lost Cole Porter tune, one of those late night, unlucky in love melodies.”

Trumpet great Bobby Shew -who also wrote the liner notes- calls it “tremendous!”
