Biography

Roach Studios - The Beginning

In the winter of 1995 in Murfreesboro, TN, I began a home recording project with James Butler.

Over the course of that winter and spring we produced over 20 recordings in various styles and genres, 9 of them (and 3 bonus tracks) eventually made their way onto our debut, entitled "Roach Studios Sampler Demo", released in early summer of 1996.

Flash forward to January 2006, San Diego, CA. It is just over 10 years after we began recording tracks for the original Roach Studios project, and I'm wrapping up the last of the work for the first Paper Moon CD with Scot Taber.

I had purchased a recording interface and software to help with the CD work, I wanted to learn how to use it to put together decent recordings at home, and possibly record some serious music on the side.

Rather than dive in with any musical masterpieces in mind, I decided to experiment with different genres and production styles to get a feel for the workflow and get up to speed.

Over the course of the next 8 months I recorded several demos, none of them very serious...when I realized I had enough decent songs for a complete CD I knew exactly what to call it - "Roach Studios 2 - Later At Bob's..".

It wouldn't be the same without James Butler on board, so I arranged to fly him out to San Diego for a week-long recording session, producing 2 of the tracks on this CD.

After the first day or so we fell right into our usual work routine (after not working together in years), when the sessions were over we were just kicking into high gear (just think of all the cool things you're NOT going to hear on this CD).

Hopefully it won't take another 10 years to put together Roach Studios 3, in the meantime here's the benchmark for "where I'm at" in 2006, I look forward to these recordings growing old and becoming classics in my small world of family and friends.
