The electronica pioneer's sprawling new retrospective is a fittingly multi-valent double disc, bouncing from punchy house tracks to snazzy studio remixes to jazzy live displays. It's a snapshot of a restless virtuoso, equal parts texture-obsessed sound engineer and up-all-night spinmeister.
Twelve years after co-founding F Communications, Laurent Garnier releases Retrospective. This double-disc collection – comprised of Garnier originals, edits, fan favorites and selected unreleased tracks - reflects Garnier's twelve-year career history.
From definitive club classic "Crispy Bacon" to Garnier's rework of Carl Craig's "Demented," Retrospective showcases the artist's vision and reflects the diversity of Garnier's production abilities. Previously unreleased tracks include "Flashback" (video mix), "Man with the Red Face" (live recording with Norwegian jazz pianist Bugge Wesseltoft), "Acid Eiffel" (also a live recording with Bugge Wesseltoft), and Garnier's edit of DJ Marky's "Butterfly" (Wake Up Lab remix).
Retrospective also includes a number of tracks that have previously only been available on vinyl. These include Garnier's "6 Months Earlier" and "Sambou" as well as Elgia's "Basic" (Wake Up Lab remix).
As co-founder of F Communications (with longtime friend Eric Morand), Laurent Garnier has been a seminal figure in electronic music. He wears many hats – artist, producer, remixer, label-head – but it his passion and talent that has won him fans the world over. Retrospective is an album that reflects the artist; demanding, passionate, dare- devil, gifted, curious and versatile. Different.
