North Carolina rapper Legacy turned to hip-hop as an alternative to a life of crime, and his compelling tracks bear the weight of his upbringing. Tough, bracingly honest lyrics are given deep resonance by tender background loops, including rural strings and cracking horns.
L.E.G.A.C.Y. (Life Ends Gradually And Changes You) was born at Fort Bragg Military Base, and raised in Fayetteville, NC. On the brink of living the life of a stick-up kid, he turned to hip-hop as a young teenager to put a halt to the downward spiral of trouble that had become his life. "Hip-hop kept me out of trouble," says L.E.G.A.C.Y., "it taught me respect for myself and allowed my to earn the respect of others along the way."
L.E.G.A.C.Y. joined the JUSTUS LEAGUE crew in 2001, after being introduced to 9TH WONDER by a mutual friend. After recording several tracks, ostensibly for possible inclusion on 9TH WONDER?S solo album, L.E.G.A.C.Y. was invited to formally join the crew that includes LITTLE BROTHER (9th WONDER, RAPPER BIG POOH & PHONTE), YAZARAH, THE AWAY TEAM, CHAUNDON, O-DASH, KHRYSIS, BIG DHO, and others.
In 2004, HALL OF JUSTUS teamed up with the newly formed label 6 HOLE RECORDS, headed by COLORADO ROCKIES INFIELDER DESI RELAFORD, to release a series of albums from the crew, including L.E.G.A.C.Y.?s Project Mayhem. Other projects to be released through this partnership include albums from 9th WONDER, THE AWAY TEAM, and RAPPER BIG POOH.
L.E.G.A.C.Y. draws from a wide variety of musical influences, ranging from Rakim, Run DMC, LL Cool J and Big Daddy Kane to The Doors, Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix. His style is dark and thoughtful, a reflection of his days as a shorty doing crimes both petty, and not so petty. L.E.G.A.C.Y. as an artist is committed to reinvigorating hip-hop, and taking us back to the era where rappers were leaders with originality and creativity.
L.E.G.A.C.Y.'s album Project Mayhem will be in stores worldwide May 17, 2005 on HALL OF JUSTUS/ 6 HOLE RECORDS. With most of the production on his LP being handled by 9TH WONDER (Jay-Z, Memphis Bleek, Murs, Jean Grae and De La Soul) he can?t lose. His previous single "Nice" b/w "The Organ Donor", and "I Hate L.E.G.A.C.Y" is out now on HALL OF JUSTUS/FAT BEATS.
