With its vaguely psychotic vocals and definitely psychedelic soundscapes, this Newark act brings to mind a mash of rock history's most creepy-cool crackpots. If your headphones will let you, imagine Marc Bolan singing to impress Syd Barrett or the Flaming Lips imitating Will Oldham.
Moyse’s reverberating voice accompanied by acoustic/electric guitars, piano and organ gives listeners a warped-out experience. But don’t be phased by the seemingly washed-out, blurry, brilliant sounds this Newark-based band cranks out, it’s art, it’s supposed to sound that way.
“Hmmm…those guys look familiar,” you say. Here’s a tip: you may have spotted Licorice Roots featured in CMJ Music Report and Melody Maker. Magnet named them “Most Underrated Bands of the Last Ten Years”, and Rolling Stone included the band in their “Hotlist” [08 Feb 2007 issue]. Has anyone mentioned that the band was on Sassy magazine's “Cute Band Alert”?
