Max Billions hits with raw instrumental hip-hop flavor tweaked with a tight, understated electronic edge. He snaps each groove into place with an urban attitude balancing gritty hip-hop backbeats and delicious, lo-fi samples. The underlying beats of Chocolate Industry with a little Premier twist, stripped down to the no-frills, MC-ready level.
A DJ for over 12 years up and down the East Coast in Philly, Washington DC, Providence, New York and more, Max Billions has probably spun at a house party near you. His distinct and sample heavy production comes from work on the MPC, 4-track, turntables, computer and more. Having one foot in hip hop territory and the other in the instrumental swamp is where he is leaving his electrified footprint.
Max Billion’s work with MCs and flying solo made its way onto numerous demos and mixtapes before he hit wax on the initial Sound-Ink compilation Colapsus. In 2003 he appeared on the MF DOOM collaboration album, Viktor Vaughn, which has sold over 20,000 copies to top reviews. His production on this album, along with the story line was inspired by late 80s early 90’s era hip hop, but set in the future. Raw yet fully developed tracks take from and are inspired by esoteric production from the likes of The Bomb Squad, Bobcat, Sir Jinx, Sam Sever and others, all known for their powerful work in that prescribed era.
A track featuring vocals from Vast Aire will be featured on the upcoming Sound-Ink Compilation, Bastard Soul. A solo 10” and EP are due in the spring of 2005. His visual side can be seen on Sound Ink cover art layout and designs for M. Sayyid, Markus Wormstorm, Mutamassik and Viktor Vaughn.
