Even those who find Philip Glass's works more suited to shattering his namesake--and who have written off contemporary classical/minimalist as hopelessly academic--will be drawn in by Stewart's tender, melodic compositions. Simple piano phrases set up heavy organ drones in a mix of fragility and power.
Michael J Stewart initially studied piano and flute but turned towards composition early on in his studies and was encouraged further by Michael Hurd and Grayston Ives (ex King's Singers) while studying at Chichester. He later studied at Trinity College of Music (1977-1981) in London where his teacher was Sir John Tavener.
