Fans of '90s MTV cult classic "The State" and hilarious sleepaway-camp satire "Wet Hot American Summer" are familiar with Showalter's eccentric brand of humor: a mix of high camp, lowbrow perversion, and general cultural skewering. It's all on display on his new set of music and sketches.
With only one week until the release of comedian/actor Michael Showalter's debut album, the countdown is on for what is surely one of this year's most exciting records. Just last month, Stereogum.com unveiled the details around Sandwiches & Cats, a mix of live stand up and in-studio sketches and songs recorded this summer in Brooklyn and Chicago. The album hits stores on November 13th through JDub Records, and Showalter has already hit the road with fellow comedian Michael Ian Black for a nationwide tour.
Throughout the past 15 years, Showalter's made a name for himself as one of the premier names in comedy – first with MTV's sketch hit The State, then cult classic Wet Hot American Summer, before Comedy Central's Stella and feature film The Baxter. More recently, guests such as Andy Samberg, Michael Ian Black, Paul Rudd, Zack Galifianakis, and David Cross have made appearances on his CollegeHumor.com series, The Michael Showalter Showalter.
Pitchfork Media, Tiny Mixtapes, and Culture Bully have all chimed in with news on the album, a zealous call to action to revisit all things Michael Showalter, and a study in comparison/contrast between Showalter's "Erotica" and Wes Anderson's A Life Aquatic. In addition, fashion and lifestyle source Refinery 29's profiled Showalter in their Style & People section, where he waxed poetic on the virtues of global warming, high heels, and McDonalds among other things.
