Editor's review

Now that Kathleen Edwards has made the transition from next big thing to current thing, an heir is needed. Into that pair of scuffed boots steps Kansas City's Anthony, who trades in gorgeous alt-country melodies and Aimee Mann-style vocal empathy. The biz is catching on quick, too; read, production by ex-Wilcoer Jay Bennett and Mountain Stage-time with k.d. Lang and Bruce Cockburn.

Biography

Michelle Anthony is a Kansas City native, Milwaukee transplant and current resident of Austin, Texas. Born into a musical family, she began playing the piano when she was a toddler. In high school and college, she played bass, guitar, keyboards and sang back-up vocals for local rock bands. She booked national bands for her university and worked as an A&R intern for Capitol Records. She considered a career in the music business, but a move to the coast was indefinitely postponed when she entered graduate studies in Milwaukee. She continued writing songs, playing in bands, and worked as a production assistant for a large music festival company.

Michelle released her first solo album, Stand Fall Repeat, in August 2004 on the Chicago label Burn and Shiver. She toured the Midwest extensively throughout the past year and also played in NYC, LA and Austin, TX. In recording her album she had the chance to work with one of her musical heroes, Jay Bennett, at his studio in Chicago. Michelle also appeared on Mountain Stage (West Virginia) in October 2004 with k.d. Lang and Bruce Cockburn and on the WGN-TV Morning Show in Chicago. Michelle and her band recently played the 2005 South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas.

She is currently working on her second album with producer Barry Goldberg, who has worked with the Eagles, Smashing Pumpkins, Fleetwood Mac and Ricky Lee Jones, among others. Players on the album include guitarist and co-writer Scott Anthony; lead guitarist Grant Tye (Robbie Fulks); drummer Gerald Dowd (Robbie Fulks, Nora O'Connor); bassist Brian Wooldridge (Wooldridge Brothers); and bassist/hammond player, Ryan Stang (Dustworks).

About the band Current lineup is: Scott Anthony, Gerald Dowd, Grant Tye and Brian Wooldridge. In 2004, the following musicians played with the band: Anjl Rodee, Chris DeMay, Michael Woelfel, Nick Verban, Ryan Stang, Jack Rodee, and Don Moore. For coast dates: Konrad Meissner (Silos) in CA/NYC, Don Heffington (Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris) in Los Angeles, and Chris Lovejoy, Carl Urbinati and Lance Konnerth in CA.
