Editor's review

"Megapop" might be a better description of the SF outfit's style: the group seems to collide a quarter-century of pop music's big ideas. To follow their timeline, New Wave's vacant vocals cede to synth-pop's shine, get sprinkled with loud-quiet-loud brawn, then widen to fit sweeping electronica.

Biography

San Francisco based band Minipop mixes soaring vocals and melodies into layered guitars and keyboards to create a lush brand of dream pop. After a chance meeting between Tricia Kanne and Matthew Swanson, five years since they had previously parted ways, the two began writing “mini” pop songs and the band was born. Through other fateful encounters and perfectly timed introductions the band came together and started playing around San Francisco in 2005. Upon arrival, Minipop broke into the blossoming Bay Area music scene and began to have an immediate impact with kids throughout the City. The band was asked to support a number of national acts coming through town (Metric, Tegan & Sara, Pinback, Glen Tilbrook) and began touring the west coast and developing their sound and live show. In April of 2006 the band took a six-month break to record their debut full-length album with producer Chris Manning (ex-Jellyfish member). Their first show back in November sold out and the band picked up right were they had left off. Upon finishing the album, their new track “Like I Do” immediately caught the ear of San Francisco’s alternative radio station. “Like I Do” was picked as a “top 25 favorite Soundcheck song” in Nov/Dec by Aaron Axelson, music director/DJ on Live 105 (KITS). Minipop was also selected by the station as a top 10 band to watch out for in 2007. The lineup is: Tricia Kanne (vocals, keyboard, guitar), Matthew Swanson (keyboards, guitars), Lauren Grubb (drums), Nick Forte (bass), and Ross Grant (guitars).
