Sharp, organic drums and riffing instrumentals prove that Williams is right when she calls jazz, not R&B, her true home base. Paired with her inviting pipes--they're somehow both husky and brassy, recalling Jill Scott--this brand of neo-soul is loose-limbed and airy.
Natalie Williams is a name that will be familiar to some as the sensational voice that rocked the Jazz Cafe twice last year with her stunning vocals; this 25 year old singer/songwriter specialises in modern vocal jazz fused with neo soul and RnB.
The low key pre-release of the album last year received what can only be described as phenomenal support to launch Natalie's career, with top DJ's such as Trevor Nelson (Radio One) Simon Phillips (Capital) giving major support. The specialist music press also hailed Natalie as a major new talent including features in Touch, B&S, Echoes, IDJ and Evening Standard.
The forthcoming album 'Yours Truly' is an accomplished blend of hip soul and smooth jazz infused vocals with production contributions from Full Crew, Midas Touch and Ruff and Tumble.
Natalie not only works fantastically on CD, she is a performance driven artist and performs heavily on the live and jazz circuits. In 2000 she toured internationally with the European Jazz Orchestra, in 2002 and she headlined at the Berlin Philharmonic for Jazz Radio 2002 and 2003 she represented British Jazz by performing at the international Jazz Festival in Kathmandu.
Of British Hungarian descent, Natalie is multi-lingual and has recorded and performed tracks in French and German for the European market.
In the UK Natalie has performed in some of the country's most famous venues and events; headlining at The Jazz Cafe, Smollensky's On The Strand, Stratford Circus and the Cafe de Paris. She has also appeared at The Hippodrome (supporting Sunshine Anderson and City High), Southport weekender, Ocean, Sound and was a featured live artist on MTV's 'Baselounge' alongside Lemar and Javine.
Natalie always felt particularly attuned to jazz because she grew up listening to Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, by way of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker and the blues.
As a graduate of Guildhall Music College Natalie says "I knew that what I'd learned in school was useful and had been very valuable to me to grow as a musician, but I also knew I had to get out there and just do my thing." In her last year at Guildhall, Natalie had already started collaborating with some of the UK's most established producers, including Mark Hill of the "Artful Dodger", and unusually for a jazz graduate she signed a development deal with the urban independent label Eastside Records.
To develop what?
"I wanted to record an album of original material that would fuse R&B and Soul (I listened to a lot of Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo & Erykah Badu) with the music that influenced me first and foremost: Jazz."
This album reflects this mood with oh so laid back tracks 'Lazy Days' and 'If I Can't', more reflective tracks, 'All About Us' and 'Give It All You've Got' and up tempo tracks 'Private Party' and title track 'Yours Truly'.
