Editor's review

After penning several classic 1930s novels, Nathaniel West took a half century off, then starting listening to Bright Eyes, added "Street" to his name, and reinvented himself as an indie-pop songwriter in his midtwenties. A more troubadourish version of Mr. Oberst, West is currently one of the hottest acts in red-hot Austin, TX.

Biography

Street West is one of the best young guitarists to be found today. Coming out of a blues rock background, having memorized the recorded work of his heroes Albert King, B.B. King, Jimmi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan by the early age of fifteen, he has gone on to become an expert musicologist & student of guitar-based music from Sunhouse through Jimmy Page & Duane Allman, up to the music of Nirvana and his fellow contemporary, Derek Trucks (Street West & Trucks are the same age).

He could easily teach graduate classes in American musicology if that was his bent, but Street West's life's work is the guitar. A guitar is his constant companion, he sleeps with it, it goes with him everywhere, and there are several great photos around of him as he actually fell asleep in mid-riff. He is equally at home on electric, acoustic, 12-string & dobro and has mastered nearly every style of playing including a mean slide, and precise fingerpicking. When he gets warmed up onstage his guitar playing owns the audience, crackling with the kind of energy that is reminiscent of a few of his great predecessors.

In addition to his guitar work, Street West is a great songwriter and also excels as a producer in the recording studio. He has studied voice for over a decade with the great vocal coach Ron Anderson and learned his recording skills from renowned producer/engineer Duane Baron during the recording & mixing of his first album, "Light Out For the Territory" (2003), skills that were put to the test when he produced his own second album, "American Way" (2004. Both of these albums were released through the indie label, Puffin Records, to which he has been signed for nearly ten years. Several EP recordings preceded the release of Street West?s two full album releases.

Recently the impact of his work began to rise above the radar screen, attracting attention from powerful individuals within the music industry establishment who are now lending their expertise to his existing home grown ?indie? management team. Street West is the real deal. This young passionate troubadour is busy creating guitar riffs and writing songs to keep his fans happy well into this new millennium. Onstage, this smashingly good guitarist, wonderful vocalist, & powerful front man is exploding onto the scene as he continues to move outward from his solid bluesy, Americana roots, all the while inventing whole new sub-genres of rock that come from beyond the curve and represent the not-so-faint echoes of the future.
