Chirper-in-chief Joanna Newsom would likely approve of the multi-talented McKay's sprawling latest, which sands off some of the shrill edges while remaining endearingly elfin. Lusty piano, downy back-tracking, and McKay's dewy lyricism all add to the theme.
On Halloween 2006, Nellie McKay will release the self-produced Pretty Little Head as she originally intended: 23 songs on two discs with a 44-page color booklet of photos and lyrics through her own label, Hungry Mouse (distributed by spinART / Ryko). In addition to scoring the movie-musical The Amazing True Story of a Teenage Single Mom, Nellie has been active in supporting get-out-the-vote efforts, the campaign to close Columbia University's primate laboratories, and working to ban carriage horses throughout the country. She recently won a Theatre World Award for her portrayal of Polly Peachum in the Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera and will join Hilary Swank and Lisa Kudrow in P.S. I Love You, a Warner Bros. film currently in production.
