Editor's review

Better known for fragrant intellectuals and the acquired taste charm of Poughkeepsie, Vassar College has lately produced something of less disputable value: Jamaican chanteuse Nicky Alrica. This Bronx resident crosses chant with belting pipes over taut, streamlined dancehall beats.

Biography

Twenty-five year old singer/songwriter, Nicky was born in England, raised in Jamaica, West Indies and moved to Poughkeepsie, NY to attend Vassar College at 18 years old. She now lives in the Bronx, where she is pursuing her singing career. Her experience as an entertainer started to grow tremendously in her high school years. She was a dedicated member of her high school choir, singing solos on many occasions. She was also in the dance group and the drama club. Nicky never passed up an opportunity to be on stage, especially when it came to showcasing her singing talents. She has sung in lineups including popular Jamaican artists such as Elephant Man, Red Rat and Junior Tucker. It was in college that Nicky got the opportunity to be educated in her art, as well as discover her own style. She took two years of music theory and harmony. Nicky also took percussion lessons for four years with a focus on the drum set. She was a member of the Vassar College Women's Chorus for a year, sang background vocals for All Together Worship Band for three years, danced in the Vassar Fly People troupe for a year and was a member of Alive!, Vassar Christian A cappella for four years. Nicky's involvement in these groups gave her experience in performing for large audiences in various types of venues. Currently, Nicky is focusing on writing and recording new music with a soulful new style. Soul with elements of reggae, hip hop and jazz all work together to complement her powerful vocals, and her all-round uniqueness and vibrance is capturing the attention of many. She recently received 1st place in the first annual NY fame competition. Great things are in store for Nicky's musical career!
